Gearbox issues

Is your gearbox broken? We’ve got the answers to your most pressing questions. With our extensive experience, we'll pinpoint the most common issues and help you make the right decision.

Gearbox problems symptoms

Here are the 5 most common gearbox problems symptoms:

Gear synchros

One of the first signs of gearbox wear is the synchronizers. They cause grinding and noise during gear shifts, either when upshifting or downshifting. Synchronizers are responsible for matching the rotational speed of the gearbox with the engine. If this component is worn out, it can cause problems. This may be due to aggressive gear changes or a malfunctioning clutch system.

Oil leakage

Oil leaks from the gearbox can be caused by the natural wear of oil seals. Gearbox seal replacement is usually straightforward but often requires the removal of the drive system or the gearbox itself. Mechanical damage to the gearbox housing can also cause transmission oil leaks.

Slipping out of gear

Gear slipping is a situation where the gearbox "kicks out" of gear during driving, which can be dangerous and frustrating. This issue typically manifests by shifting into neutral automatically after a gear is engaged, potentially leading to loss of vehicle control.

Gears in the gearbox transfer power from the engine to the wheels. Over time, normal wear can round or damage the gear teeth, leading to improper meshing. Internal components like shift forks or detent mechanisms can become damaged or worn, affecting proper gear engagement and retention. Damaged mechanisms can cause gears to slip out.

Gears not engaging

Difficulty in changing gears happens when shifting takes more effort than usual or becomes impossible. This can show up as a stiff gear lever, resistance when shifting, or a complete inability to change gears. Worn or damaged internal parts of the gearbox, like shift forks, synchronizers, and gears, can cause problems with gear meshing and shifting. Transmission fluid lubricates and cools internal gearbox components; low fluid levels can increase friction and cause overheating, leading to poor lubrication and resistance when changing gears. Issues with the clutch, such as a worn clutch disc, pedal problems, or hydraulic system issues, can also affect gear engagement. Incomplete clutch disengagement makes meshing gears difficult, resulting in resistance during gear changes.

Noisy gearbox

Noisy gearbox operation manifests as sounds like whirring, humming, buzzing, knocking, or metallic grinding. These sounds can occur during driving at different gears or in neutral. Often, the noise intensifies during acceleration, deceleration, or gear shifts. Bearings in the gearbox allow smooth rotation of shafts and gears. Over time, they can wear out or become damaged, causing noise. This noise typically manifests as a humming or whirring sound, which intensifies with increasing engine speed. Various gearbox elements, such as gears, shafts, or synchronizers, can also become loose or damaged due to wear or improper use, resulting in knocking or metallic grinding sounds during gear changes or while driving. Gears in the gearbox can wear out over time, leading to improper meshing and noise. This noise is often heard as metallic grinding during gear changes. If your gearbox has any of the mentioned problems, it requires repair or replacement. Different noises indicate various issues (e.g., knocking suggests a damaged gear, clicking indicates a broken tooth).

Gearbox specialist

At this point, you're likely looking for a transmission repair to keep your car running smoothly. Let’s look at the options available.

Workshops near you

Ideally, you would find a workshop near you that can repair your gearbox. If you have one nearby, that's great, especially if it specializes in gearbox repairs. If such a workshop is far away, the costs of towing and logistics can be substantial.

Your mechanic and the gearbox

Did you not find a professional manual gearbox workshop nearby? But your acquaintance mechanic is willing to repair your gearbox? We leave such an option for consideration. From our experience, we can say that it's not always a good idea. The gearbox seems to have a simple construction, but only a workshop specializing in this type of repair can assess the wear of individual components and knows all the nuances that occur in a huge number of gearbox models. Unfortunately, we often receive gearboxes "after repair," and although the customer paid a little less, the final costs can exceed our estimates.

Which workshop to choose?

Which workshop should you choose? The best one is close by, saving you unnecessary miles and transportation costs. Any car workshop can remove your gearbox, as this is a common procedure during, for example, clutch or dual-mass flywheel replacement. We recommend handing over your car to the nearest trusted mechanic and assigning the gearbox repair to professionals (us:).

Looking for a gearbox

So, your car is at the mechanic, the gearbox is removed, and what next? You have a couple of options:

New gearbox

You can, of course, buy a new gearbox if it is available at your authorized service center (ASO). However, few people choose this step due to the high cost of such a gearbox, often exceeding the value of the entire car. Gearboxes typically fail after several hundred thousand kilometers or many years, likely making it unavailable at authorized services by then. Nevertheless, this is the most reliable option because if you maintain oil change intervals, the gearbox can last another similar distance or even more.

Used gearbox

You can also buy a used gearbox. This is the cheapest option, often available at vehicle dismantling stations or car junkyards. However, if you cannot drive a car with such a gearbox, we do not recommend this option. You cannot visually assess the condition of the gearbox, and even if it still works, you cannot be sure that a failure won't occur after 100 or several thousand kilometers. Often, the conditions in which such parts are stored in warehouses leave much to be desired. They can be exposed to weather conditions such as moisture, rain, or even contamination by small elements like sand or dirt. A gearbox that is not used for a long time and does not contain oil can corrode inside, causing irreversible damage. Such gearboxes are often not suitable for repair or regeneration.

Used gearbox with warranty

A used gearbox with a warranty can be a good option if the seller is reliable and can fulfill the given warranty on their products. It is suspected that such sellers do not check the internal condition of the gearbox to keep costs low, but rather calculate the risk of failure into their expenses and margins.

Reconditioned gearbox

The last option. According to us, the best, safest, and most cost-effective. Of course, we want to sell you our repaired gearbox, but in reality, we offer you peace of mind, knowing that the purchased gearbox has been handled by experienced mechanics who have been repairing these parts for years. They know what to look for during regeneration and replace all worn friction and mechanical elements. You can be sure that the bearings, seals, synchronizers, or gears used are original, durable, and dedicated to your model. We take full responsibility for our products, and although complaints are very rare, we can admit a mistake if something goes wrong. Additionally, we provide technical support at every stage of the purchase.

Decision

The time has come to decide. We will be very pleased if you choose our help.

Benefits of online purchase

Don't let the distance from our company deter you. Buying a gearbox online has many advantages. We use only trusted shipping companies, and our shipments are well secured against damage because we know how far our pallets can travel. Delivery time is quick because we ship gearboxes the same or the next day if we have them in stock. Everything is in one place without leaving your home and without searching for availability in your area. Our reconditioned gearboxes are serviced in the European Union, and we offer a warranty on our products.

Choosing the right gearbox for your car

We have probably reached the most important moment, selecting the right gearbox for your car. To ensure 100% accuracy, we match gearboxes based on the VIN number of your car. You don't need to crawl under the car or ask your mechanic to find the gearbox number. We have a complete catalog for all car brands and models to choose exactly the gearbox that was dedicated to your year, engine, and drive. And believe us, car manufacturers often like to change things invisible to the regular user.

Shipping

You don't need to do anything ; we will arrange and send transport to the location you specify or to a specific car workshop where your car is already waiting. We also arrange the return of your damaged gearbox, regardless of its condition. You won't incur any costs related to the disposal of parts. Additionally, you will receive cashback for this, and we will give your old gearbox a second life so the next person can enjoy driving. It's a WIN – WIN!

Two gearboxes, one car

First, we will send you a checked, repaired gearbox. Your mechanic will be sure that no component necessary to start the car is missing. It often happens that mechanics disassemble too many elements, such as shift rods or gearbox brackets, so this is the safest option. After installation, we will pick up the gearbox from the designated point at a convenient time for everyone. To pack the gearbox, your mechanic can use the pallet and protective elements sent by us.

Transmission installation

The gearbox is installed by a mechanic. At this stage, we are at your disposal if you have any questions. We are available at every stage, just call us (but not after midnight because we might be sleeping).

Oil

We provide you with the necessary transmission oil for the first start for free. The gearbox arrives complete and ready to be filled with oil.

Test drive

Let your mechanic take the car for a drive. They should check all the gears under different loads to ensure they engage smoothly without any noise or issues.

What to do with the old gearbox

You don't need to do anything. Just let us know where and when we should pick up the gearbox at our cost.

Cashback

Not only does the gearbox work, but you didn't have to leave your home, you acted pro-ecologically, and we will also refund your money for your old gearbox, which we will give a second life. And so, life comes full circle. You can now open your beer or apple juice.

First oil change

Since the gearbox is breaking in during the first 1000 km and the bearings are settling in, we recommend changing the oil to new after 1,000 km. This way, you will take care of your gearbox to serve you for many years.

Feedback and Recommendation

We have reached the end of our journey; we will be very pleased if you appreciate our efforts and recommend us to other weary travelers. We do our work as diligently as we can, and customer satisfaction is more valuable to us than money. It drives us to act. If something went wrong according to our or your expectations, we are here to resolve all issues and see things through to the end. If you didn't find a gearbox for your car or if it's very rare or no longer available, we will gladly undertake the repair of your gearbox in our specialized workshop.
